AZUSA – Santa Monica was a little too good and a lot too tall for Crean Lutheran.
The Saints could not stop Santa Monica’s 6-foot-2 Chantal Moawad, who scored more than half of her team’s points Saturday as Crean Lutheran lost to the Vikings 44-40 in the CIF-SS Division 3AA girls basketball championship game at Azusa Pacific University.
Crean Lutheran led 35-28 going into the fourth quarter, but was outscored 16-5 in the final period.
Moawad, set to go to Brown University, scored 23 points despite playing only 19 minutes because of foul trouble. She made 10 of her 15 shots, all of them in or next to the key. Her longest shot was a 12-foot jumper.
Crean Lutheran (27-5) was trying to win its first CIF-SS girls basketball championship.
Santa Monica (26-7) was the division’s top-seeded team. Crean Lutheran was seeded third.
Crean Lutheran relies on 3-point shooting, whether or not the opponent has a height advantage. The Saints struggled to find their range Saturday, going 7 for 30 (23 percent) on 3-point shots and 12 for 30 (24 percent) on all shots.
All 16 of Santa Monica’s baskets were two-point shots. The Vikings were 0 for 9 on 3-point attempts.
Crean Lutheran point guard Taylor Feldman (5-foot-7) scored a team-high 14 points. She had four assists. Trinity Cha (5-foot-4) scored eight points and 5-6 sophomore Emily Reed and 5-8 senior Shannon O’Malley scored six points each, while 6-foot senior Hailee Daniel contributed nine rebounds.
Santa Monica’s Iternite Reed, a 5-10 senior, scored 10 points with seven rebounds and two steals.
The Saints knew Santa Monica’s height would be a challenge.
“We definitely expected it,” Feldman said, “and we tried to prepare for it as best as we could. We knew they were going to be tall, so we knew we had to use our speed or different strengths to try to power around it.”
The season continues for both teams next week in the CIF Southern California Regionals. The brackets for the regionals will be released Sunday.
Crean Lutheran led from the early moments of the first quarter and took a 35-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Santa Monica tied it 37-37 with 1:48 remaining on a jump shot in the key by Moawad. The Vikings went ahead 39-37 with 57 seconds to go on Kalaya Hudson’s open layup off a pass from Moawad in the post, as Moawad had drawn the Saints’ defensive attention.
Moawad made that relatively long jumper from the side of the key to make it 41-37, and she made one free throw with 18 seconds left and another with 10 seconds left for a 43-37 advantage.
Feldman made a 3 with two seconds left for Crean’s final points.
Santa Monica coach Doug Kim was impressed by Crean Lutheran.
“They were tough,” he said. “It was kind of hard to see what their game plan would be, no matter how much you watch them on tape until you see them live. And, boy, they were really good live.”
Crean Lutheran took its first lead at 3-2 on a 3-pointer by Reed. O’Malley added a 3, Reed sunk another 3 and the Saints quickly had an 11-2 advantage. Crean’s defense forced four first-quarter turnovers as it took a 17-9 lead into the second quarter.
Moawad dominated the inside where she made 5 of 6 close shots and scored 11 points in the quarter.
Outside shooting again carried Crean Lutheran as O’Malley, Reed and Cha dropped in 3s. The Saints had a 28-22 lead at halftime.
Santa Monica made 10 of 19 first-half shots for 53 percent. Five of Crean Lutheran’s nine first-half baskets were 3s.
